Fresh Start is an initiative pioneered by Together for Change, working with churches and other organisations in Coventry to offer a warm and welcoming environment to refugees, asylum seekers and migrants.

Fresh Start seeks to mobilise churches in the Coventry Diocese to befriend and provide practical support to people from different cultural backgrounds, paying particular attention to refugees and migrants. Although refugees, asylum seekers and migrants receive excellent professional support here, the thing they often lack is companionship. TFC’s Fresh Start initiative helps to reduce isolation and provides practical support to newly-arrived individuals.

Fresh Start Football

We have begun a football group which works with local churches, befriending and supporting migrants, and then inviting them for a meal afterwards to seek to integrate them into church projects. 45-50 people from 21 different countries attend this project weekly, with around 120 on the books, and the vast majority of them are asylum seekers and refugees. This fantastic initiative recently caught the attention of the BBC, which lead to them putting together a news report focusing on the good work of the project. The football sessions run on a Saturday morning at Sydney Stringer School and are available to all.

ESOL Classes

Working in partnership with the Belgrade Theatre we run English conversation classes on Tuesday and Friday afternoons. Up to 20 volunteers meet to run the classes over a ‘cuppa’ and to help refugees improve their English language skills and make friends.

The Undivided Choir

Led by volunteers, the Undivided Choir welcomes refugees and migrants to come and sing together. With an ethos of unity through singing together, no matter what your level of musical ability is, the aim of the choir is to have fun, enjoy music and make friends.

Me and Osman

I have been in the UK around 9 months now since moving from Sudan. He (Matt Robinson, Fresh Start Coordinator) has really helped me with my conversational skills and pointed me in the right direction for English speaking classes for my grammar. I feel these English skills will help me to be a plumber…. He has really helped me to feel at ease here and make friends. Thank you Matthew!
