Fresh Start is an initiative pioneered by Together for Change, working with churches and other organisations in Coventry to offer a warm and welcoming environment to refugees, asylum seekers and migrants.

Fresh Start seeks to mobilise churches in the Coventry Diocese to befriend and provide practical support to people from different cultural backgrounds, paying particular attention to refugees and migrants. Although refugees, asylum seekers and migrants receive excellent professional support here, the thing they often lack is companionship. TFC’s Fresh Start initiative helps to reduce isolation and provides practical support to newly-arrived individuals.

Fresh Start Football

We started a football group in partnership with the Coventry Refugee and Migrant Centre. 45-50 people from 21 different countries attend this project weekly, with around 120 on the books. In the last couple of years, we have partnered with St Marks Coventry to establish an FA-registered football team, who play in the Coventry Church League. This side has both St Marks attendees and newly-arrived refugees and asylum seekers, and the relationship within the team is brilliant.

ESOL Classes

We run multiple ESOL classes and Conversation Cafés in Hillfields, Allesley and West Coventry. We’ve had over 200 different individuals join our English classes from 24 countries, with around 30-40 people attending each day. These classes are mainly conversational, to help with speaking and listening to build confidence and community.

One Family Service

Working in partnership with YWAM Coventry, we run a multi-linguistic One Family service. We started in January 2021 as a home group aimed at asylum seekers and refugees who were struggling to engage with online church during lockdown, but have grown into a church of 50-60 people from many different backgrounds. The service is completely translated into Farsi, Spanish and French, and we worship in multiple different languages led by individuals from within the different communities.

    Me and Osman

I have been in the UK around 9 months now since moving from Sudan. He (Matt Robinson, Fresh Start Coordinator) has really helped me with my conversational skills and pointed me in the right direction for English speaking classes for my grammar. I feel these English skills will help me to be a plumber…. He has really helped me to feel at ease here and make friends. Thank you Matthew!
